In the distant year of 10191, all the planets of the known Universe are under the control of Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV and the most important commodity in the Universe is a substance called the spice "MELANGE" which is said to have the power of extending life, expanding the consciousness and even to "fold space" ; being able to travel to any distance without physically moving. This spice "MELANGE" is said to only be produced in the desert planet of Arrakis, where the FREMEN people have the prophecy of a man who will lead them to true freedom. This "desert planet"of Arrakis is also known as DUNE. A secret report of the space "GUILD" talks about some circumstances and plans that could jeopardize the production of "SPICE" with four planets involved: ARRAKIS, CALADAN, GIEDI PRIME and KAITAIN, a world at least visually very alike to Earth and house of the Emperor of the known Universe. The "GUILD" sends a third stage navigator to KAITAIN to ask details from the Emperor and to demand him the killing of young Paul Atreides, son of the Duke Leto Atreides of CALADAN

I believe that this movie did this very well.
If you watch this movie with the mindset of it being like the book, you will be disappointed. but the fact is. br> Going into the movie with the mindset that it is a different experience than the book, you will find that this is an amazing movie, the most amazing thing is perhaps that it was made in some of the effects in this movie for that time are unheard... i honestly believe that this movie nearly puts the star wars series to shame...
having seen both the frank Herbert version of the movie from 2000 and seeing the mini series... i believe both of those were highly disappointing. br> Dune is a classic in science fiction, and a truly ground breaking film of its era.

Dune is enjoyable if you detach your mind and just let your eyes soak up the impressive sets. The voice overs and the whole inner monologue of various characters tend to get a little irritating. The acting is stiff. Even Patrick Stewart seems just to be reading lines, rather than playing them. It's too bad that the MST3K budget is rather small. They could make this film so much more enjoyable.

When I saw this movie I had not yet read his book, when I id I was appalled on how much was left out of this movies, how many of the characters were changed or modified for political correctness. I have to say while I loved this movies it should not have been done as one movie, it should have been done as it was latter on by SCI-FI channel as a series of movies so that more of the original feel of the book could be felt, as a big screen feature it could have been more graphic, and exact, as even the SF channel feature still left much to be desired in the film. versus the book but it is a sill a good film to see... But I will say to get the full story and the real effect from the story go to the local book store and pick up a caopy and read the book. This may be a hard thing to do in this day and age but reading is still sometimes a good thing to do and a few hours away from a computer, ot screen will not kill any one I swear.
